When Monmouthshire County Council needed a nutritious, easy to heat and serve menu option to add to its delivered meals service, it looked to The Real Soup Co. to provide a solution.
The Monmouthshire Meals service delivers around 2,000 meals a month to people who need a little extra support at home. Each recipient, who will have been referred to by the county’s social services team, receives a lunchtime meal, 365 days a year. Maintaining a varied yet nutritious menu, comprising dishes that are easy to heat, serve and eat, is, says catering manager and Welsh Regional Chair of the NACC (National Association of Care Caterers), Pauline Batty, one of the biggest challenges the service faces.
“This is vital” says Pauline, “as many of the people we support do not have the resources or skills to cook complex meals for themselves.”
The Real Soup Company supplies Monmouthshire Meals with five flavours of fresh soup – Tomato & Basil, Carrot & Coriander, Thai Chicken, Leek & Potato and Lentil – in generously-sized 380g single-serve pots which can be heated in a microwave in minutes and eaten straight out of the pot if need be. The pots also feature a highly unique protective sleeve for added safety and comfort.
Featuring soup on the menu is a new venture for Monmouthshire Meals, one that’s working out extremely well. Pauline adds: “The soups are a nutritious and delicious snack or meal option at any time of the day.”
Like all of the soups available from The Real Soup Company, the five flavours are supplied in easy to open single-serve pots, made to new and improved recipes which are fully compliant with FSA 2012 salt guidelines.
“We have to be very aware of all the different dietary needs that a group this large can present,” adds Pauline, “so the food we’re serving has to be of a high quality in terms of nutritional content and must also conform to strict food and allergen legislation The Real Soup Co. fits the bill perfectly.”
Underlining this initial success, the Council has now also started supplying the single-serve pots to a residential school where they are popular supper snacks.
“We have to be very aware of all the different dietary needs that a group this large can present,” adds Pauline, “so the food we’re serving has to be of a high quality in terms of nutritional content and must also conform to strict food and allergen legislation The Real Soup Co. fits the bill perfectly.”
